The 51st Meeting of the Illinois Archaeological Survey will be held in Carbondale, Illinois from September 14-16, 2007. This year the meeting is being co-hosted by the Heritage Program of the Shawnee National Forest and SIUC's Center for Archaeological Investigations. The meetings will consist of the IAS business meeting Friday evening (September 14) followed by a reception at the Center for Archaeological Investigations (CAI) curation facility north of Carbondale. Paper presentations consisting of current research (morning) and more formal papers (afternoon) will be held at SIU Carbondale on Saturday, September 15.
A highlight of the meetings will be a banquet ($30 per person) on Saturday night at Von Jakob Winery which is located in the Shawnee Hills about 12 miles south of Carbondale. This winery is in a very scenic location and is known both for its excellent wine and food. We will have live entertainment at the banquet in the form of Dennis Stroughmatt, a well-known French Creole fiddler and singer who both tells stories and plays Creole music. To keep everyone safe, bus transportation for up to 65 people from Carbondale to the winery and back will be provided. Activities on Sunday (depending on interest) will consist of tours to the Kincaid mound center or the Korando rock shelter and cave near Murphysboro, which contains the only known Mississippian period charcoal and ocher "cave art" drawings in Illinois.
Titles and abstracts for 15 minute paper presentations should be sent to Mark Wagner, Center for Archaeological Investigations, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, 62901-4527. Banquet pre-registration is required so that we can tell the winery the number of people who will attend and 'entree preference. Please send a check for $30 made out to the IAS for each person planning to attend to Mark Wagner at SIU.

We hope all who are planning to attend the Annual Meeting of the Illinois Archaeological Survey will also stay and help us celebrate Illinois rich heritage at Von Jakob Winery on Saturday, September 15, 2007, near Alto Pass, IL. We have arranged for transportation to and from Carbondale to Winery so that everyone will be free to enjoy themselves. Festivities will start at 6:00 pm with wine tasting. Dinner will be served at 7:00 which will consist of your choice of German Beef (garlic clove-stuffed brisket, slow-roasted and basted with wine sauce), smoked chicken (grapevine smoked chicken slowly smoked on our winter-pruned vines) or vegetarian lasagna. Side dishes will include Rice Pilaf Von Jacob, garlic mashed potatoes and tossed salad, baked rolls and desert (apple tart with French vanilla ice cream or Doc's Famous Crème Broule'. If you would like to learn more about the Von Jacob winery please go to www.vonjakobvinyard.com.
We also have an after dinner speaker planned: French Creole Fiddler and Chanteur Dennis Stroughmatt et 'Esprit Creole. Dennis is Illinois native who was first introduced to American French culture as a teenager near Old Mines, Missouri. It was there that he spent two and a half intensive years recording, observing, and learning many of the Creole French traditions still alive in "Upper Louisiana." The knowledge that he gained there included a centuries old French Creole fiddling style, fluency in Illinois-Missouri Creole French, and a wealth of stories and songs from area story tellers and singers which have been handed down generation to generation in Missouri and Illinois for nearly 300 years. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!
