BOOKS

The book for this course is:

The book can be purchased at the Parkland College Bookstore or it can be ordered directly from Prentice-Hall.

While I don't recommend it, the Macionis text is also available as a CD. The complete text is included along with several multimedia featurettes. There is a considerable cost savings, but I think that it would be very difficult to do all of the required reading off your monitor.

All chapter reading assignments refer to the Macionis text.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

MACIONIS WEB SITE:
The publisher of the text provides a Web site, Macionis. Use it as you see fit. You can get there from any of my pages by double clicking on the text book image in the upper right hand corner.

Macionis also maintains his own personal web. You can find it at: Macionis. Once you scroll down through the initial screens of his publications, you will encounter some very interesting sociological stuff. Click the "Send Me an Email" button if you want to correspond directly with Dr. Macionis. He seems to be very good about responding to student email :>)

BROWSERS:
There are several browsers available for participating in this course. Personally, I use Mosaic..er..I mean, Netscape 7.x...er..I mean Firefox. I think that our site might best be viewed using it. If you would like to download a free copy, here is the link Mozilla Firefox.

EMAIL ACCOUNTS:
If you have enrolled in this course directly through Parkland, then you will automatically be assigned a student email account. To learn more about how to access it, please go to the following site:

Login to Your Student Email Account (You may want to visit the "Help Menu" page.)

For the purposes of this course, I will only use your student email account. Get yours set up. The spam and pornography filters I have in place will ONLY allow email from your student accounts to pass through.

A NOTE OF PRECAUTION - set up your email system to automatically create a backup copy of any out going documents (this is commonly in a mail box folder labeled "SENT"). This simple act can save lots of effort if the demons of the email system happen to eat your document. Stop right now and check your email configuration.

EMAIL PROGRAMS:
Some students are in need of an email program and have asked what program I use to manage my email. I have used Eudora for many years and have found it to be very stable and powerful. The Eudora site offers their package in two, free, downloadable forms: Eudora Lite (NO spell check, etc.) and Eudora Pro (with advertisements). I used Eudora Lite for several years and then purchased a copy of Eudora Pro. I don't know how annoying the advertisements would be.

That said, this semester I am switching to Mozilla Thunderbird. So far I like it better than Eudora. We will see how stable it is.

COMPUTER ACCESS ON CAMPUS:
Computers with WWW connections (read - free connect time) are widley available on campus. For instance, the Social Science and Human Services Department maintains a lab in D-221. You could certainly do all of the work for this course from that location. I want to encourage you to stop by and check out the hardware. While you are there, stop by my office for a little visit.
