The 50th annual meeting of the Illinois Archaeological Survey (IAS) is being held in combination with the 50th Annual Meeting of the Midwestern Archaeological Conference in Urbana, Illinois. To honor this event, senior and other members of the IAS who played significant roles in Illinois archaeology from the 1950s through the present day both as IAS officers and as leading researchers in the field of eastern North American archaeology will present papers on topics of their own choosing at a special symposium on Friday afternoon.

6:30-8:30 - Illinois Archaeological Survey business meeting for IAS Fellows. There will be an informal get together in honor of the IAS Symposium speakers (and their guests) in the MARS, INC hotel rooms after the business meeting. Details will be announced at the meeting.

1:00-4:30 - Invited Symposium on Illinois Archaeology

“A Celebration of Illinois Archaeology: Fifty Years of the Illinois Archaeological Survey”

Abstract

Since its founding in 1956, members of the Illinois Archaeological Survey (IAS) have made many significant contributions to the study of the archaeology of eastern North America. This symposium celebrates those contributions through the presentations by senior members of the IAS of papers that reflect their own particular research interests. The diversity of subject matters considered in this symposium attests to the history of the IAS as one of the premier organizations for archaeological research in the eastern United States over the last 50 years.

Presenters: Elizabeth Benchley, James Brown, Jane Buikstra, Melvin Fowler, Robert Hall, Alan Harn, Barry Lewis, Jon Muller, Patricia O’Brien, Stuart Struever, and Bonnie Styles.

6:00-9:00 - MAC reception which is being supported by the IAS and is open to IAS members. Food and drinks will be provided.
