Chapter 10 HEALTH - STRESS - COPING
Frustration (general):

- What are the two different ways to apply the concept of frustration to your life?

- Which defense mechanisms is most often used to deal with blockage and conflict frustrations?

Blockage frustration:

- What is a blockage frustration? (both external and personal)

- What is the relationship between the level of incentive value of a goal and the level of frustration one feels when the goal is blocked?

- What are the basic responses to blockage frustrations?

Conflict frustration:

- Which type is the "easiest" to resolve? The hardest?

- What are the two "ingredients" are necessary in an approach-approach situation in order to cause conflict frustration?

- What is the relationship of strength of motivation and feeling of frustration in an approach-approach conflict?

- What do most people try to do if they are caught in an avoidance-avoidance conflict?


Stress

- What is it?

- What causes it? (good stuff, bad stuff?? etc.)

- Look over the Social Readjustment Rating Scale. What is the most costly event listed?

- Look over our discussion of The Stress Response (G.A.S.)

Review the specific stress management techniques we discussed in class.

Why are exercise and relaxation techniques important? (What aspects of the stress response do they target?)

What was the technique suggested for counteracting "upsetting thoughts"?


Chapter 12 - PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS

Definitions of abnormality (You should understand what they are as well as their strong and weak points)

What are social norms? Which of the four definitions of abnormality do they most influence?

What is the DSM-IV?

What are the three different factors which make up clinical anxiety?

What is an obsession? A compulsion?
