Suggestions from Former Students of CIS122
At the end of last semester I asked all my students to submit suggestions for future students taking this class. The following were submitted by on-line and on-campus students who successfully completed the course.
Suggestions from student in the on-line section of CIS122
1.
This
is a tough course so put aside enough time to go over and learn all the
material covered.
2. If you’re not a self
motivated person then you might not want to take the online class.
3. Don't be scared by the first two
comments. This is a fun class and very satisfying. Just be ready to learn a lot
of material.
4. Don't fall behind. If you get
stuck, ask the Instructor for help or a fellow student. It will be very hard to
catch up.
5. Make sure to read all the
material in the
textbooks and do the chapter exercises. They are very helpful.
Work hard, pay attention to details in the programming. Don't get frustrated if your program doesn't work at first. It takes perseverance to make sure that everything works correctly. If you don't understand something or need clarification, then just ask. Mrs. Couch is willing to help. She does a good job of helping students to understand why their problem occurs. Thus, the student does not make the same mistake again.
When you are in this class, you need to really watch the videos the instructor posts online. They can really help you with the labs or if you missed something in class.
This course cis 122 is good for you no matter you want to be a programmer or not. It enlarges your view to watch an object. I recommend it to those who have like CS world and those who are just curious at CS world. The instructor Kari is a very wonderful lady. Her patience and care helps me through the difficulty each time when I want to give up. I get more than I had expected.
Keeping up with the course work is very important. It doesn't take much to get behind and then it's really hard to catch up. Also a lot of information covered in one class, so it's really important to be there as much as you can.
Before I took this class, I didn't know what programming looked like, so I took this cis122 course. It is a well-designed course for novice like me. I spend time more than I thought in this course. Although the course becomes much more complex at the end of the semester, I really recommend this course to those who want to get the basic idea of programming. I won't be a programmer in the future, but what I learned in this class is very helpful to my future study and work. Personally I have to spend much time on my young child so it's really hard when time is not enough and when you can't focus on thinking. But it's really worth spending a lot of time on it. It's very good class for me.
Some suggestions for future students: -Be patient and very carefully, because this class is little hard at the beginning. But if you follow very carefully, you'll be ok. -If you are confused, ask questions to the teacher -Don't forget to read the book and try some exercises inside. -Check your angel every time to be on time for the assessment. - as possible as you can be on class, because you'll understand more.
Some suggestions for future students: - Keep paying attention in class, because once you left, it's difficult to catch up. - Every class is very valuable and critical for next classes. - Asking question is better than thinking alone and knowing nothing. - Programming is fun ^^.
You must have a lot of free time to do the labs and try do do all! Attention with the debug and walkthrough exercises , they are really helpful. And don't get panic before the tests, You can do it!!
They should watch the videos you've provide this semester. They are really helpful. Also, they should do those debugging exercise, there are helpful too.
Hi, welcome to Programming world. Actually, I hadn't know anything about programming language before I took a class. So everything that is about visual basic was strange and hard. In addition, I'm international student. So after first class, I thought about drop! But I tried to read textbook hard and asked question to instructor 'carry' frequently. When I asked a question, Carry always answer and teach me very kind and in detail. As time goes by, I was being good at lecture. After programming became very interesting! I recommend two thing. One is asking to instructor when you face problem that is hard thing or confused thing. And second thing , read a textbook. So you can feel it is interesting! Good luck to you
First and foremost, pay attention. If you are not sure ask questions. And work with your fellow classmates, you can learn a lot from another person's point of view. Make sure the assignment you turn is the correct assignment and not just the original shell, made that mistake a few times. This class is a fairly descent course to get a very good grade, just don't make it harder than what it really is. If you get stuck, walk away for a minute or two and come back to it and the solution should present its self. It is also very helpful to look ahead and look at other resources (internet, books, etc.). This will help to make the new concepts that are introduced easier to understand. Watch the videos Kari makes, if you get stuck they are an awesome lifesaver for your coding.
Hey, what's up! okay so my advice for this class is: 1.Come to class! 2.Don't surf the web while the teacher is teaching. 3.Don't play games. 4.Don't skip class just because you can't find a parking spot. 5.Pay attention and ask questions when you don't understand something. 6.COME TO CLASS! 7.Do all the assignments.
My advice for the course would be to pay attention to everything the teacher says and does. If the teacher is doing an example of how a piece of code will work in a program make sure you follow along and understand why it works and ask questions if you are not sure. Don't get frustrated if your program doesn't work. Most of the time it is a very small thing that can be easily fixed. Spend time at home working on the programs rather than trying to only work on them in class as it will help you learn the material better and also allow you to ask more questions in class. Refer to past labs for help on current ones, a lot of the labs build on each other which makes coding the current program a little bit easier. The number one thing NOT to do is do not play games on the computer while the teacher is talking. I have seen multiple people play on the computer while the teacher was talking and then they do not know what is going on in the class.
This course can be challenging, but taking this steps can help make it a bit easier. Don't let the computers distract you in class - Make sure you pay attention in class, what the instructor says is important. Use the help given by the instructor - The teacher puts up videos and guides to help you understand programs. Use them, they really help. Save all work and keep track of your flash drive - Using past work for reference is extremely helpful. And don't misplace your flash drive.
I guess my only suggestions that I would have is to not procrastinate. Believe me, it pays to do your programs in time and not have to worry about deadlines and things like that. Allow yourself time to go through each assignment and really think about what you're supposed to do. If you keep leaving everything for last minute, then you will always be in a rush and not take in as much info as you would like.
-Seek help when you need it. I did not do this enough, and it is the only thing that I regret. Kari is very helpful and knowledgeable when you ask. -Always make backups of things, even if you think it isn't necessary. You will regret it if you don't. Also, keep good track of your flash drive. They are easy to lose. -Do your best to avoid missing classes. If you miss one class, it can put you far behind. -Do not use excuses for anything. While Kari is usually understanding, she also will not put up with excuses when she can tell that someone is not doing his or her best. I admire this because it has caused me to re-evaluate myself and in turn I forced myself to do better, because I knew I was capable -- and so is everyone else. -When it comes to programming, try to not become overly frustrated. It comes easily to some people, and to others it may take a bit longer to grasp all the concepts. Personally, I never had any experience with programming prior to this class, and I did not do well in the beginning, to the point in which I ended up dropping the class in the spring semester and taking it again in the fall. I am glad that I re-took it and got through it, though. Sometimes you just need to clear your head and stop and take a look at what you have to accomplish. It is really not that difficult -- it just takes a certain level of thinking logically and knowing how to solve problems. I have found that sometimes the best way of doing things is to sit back and keep attempting it. If you try different things, you will usually find a solution. For the most part, Visual Studio is good about showing you what is wrong. -Do not do things last minute. For this class especially, it is important to get things done ahead of time. When I have procrastinated, I discovered that had I started my project on time, I would have had an adequate amount of time to complete it. I just needed to dive right in. :) -If Kari is demonstrating something in class, open up Visual Studio, create a new project and save it on your flash drive, then follow along. Personally, if I follow along while she is explaining something, not only do I have something to look back at later, but I also have a better understanding of it since I did it myself. -Watch the videos. They are good refreshers if you are working on a project at home. :)
