When you are alphabetizing words you look at the first letter in the word. Only if two words have the same first character do you look at the second letter, only if two words have the same first two letters do you look at the third and so forth. The same is the case when sorting character strings.
Any numeral (ASCII 48 – 57) is less than any uppercase letter (ASCII 65 – 90); any uppercase is less then any lowercase (ASCII 97 – 122).
