INTRODUCTION TO ADOBE ACROBAT PROFESSIONAL

Still dreaming of a paperless office? Struggling to mark-up that student paper for your online class? Well, Adobe Acrobat Professional might get you one step closer to your dream. In this hands-on workshop, learn how to convert any document to PDF format. Then learn how to combine, annotate, comment and even edit PDF documents. Includes advanced topics like password protection, digital signatures, reducing file size for e-mailing or web publishing.

Prerequisites: You should be comfortable with personal computers, Internet browsers, and web-based e-mail. This workshop will be taught in a Macintosh environment, but prior experience with Mac OS is not required.

Getting started

  1. Acrobat overview: Adobe web site
  2. Academic pricing: JourneyEd.com
  3. launch Acrobat Pro
  4. edit > preferences > identity: fill in name & email
    (mac users: Acrobat > preferences)
  5. edit > preferences > commenting: always use login name=no
  6. note: hand tool=default tool (always return to the hand tool)

Making PDFs (only if Acrobat Professional is installed)

  1. open "essay.doc" in Word
  2. insert > picture > from file "speakcafe.jpg" (at bottom)
  3. save
  4. file > print (choose Adobe PDF) or Adobe PDF > convert to...
  5. name file "essay.pdf"
  6. compare file sizes between DOC and PDF

Making text comments

  1. open "essay.pdf" in Acrobat Pro
  2. comments > show commenting toolbar
  3. choose HIGHLIGHTER TOOL, select text
  4. choose NOTE TOOL: type comment, close
  5. RMB on comment: choose properties, change name, close
  6. RMB on comment: make current properties default
  7. choose TEXT EDIT tool
  8. to insert: embed cursor, start typing
  9. to delete: select, hit DELETE key
  10. comments > enable for commenting...
  11. save

Making visual comments

  1. open "money.pdf" in Acrobat Pro
  2. comments > show drawing markup toolbar
  3. tools > drawing markups > show drawing tool bar
  4. try: callout tool to write comment
  5. try: dimensioning tool with comment
  6. try: pencil tool for drawing
  7. try stamp tool: create custom stamp (import "good job.pdf")
  8. file > reduce file size, save

Inserting media files

  1. file > create PDF > from file "movie.doc"
  2. tools > advanced editing > movie tool "loop.swf"
  3. draw rectangle
  4. switch to hand tool
  5. click rectangle

Combining PDFs

  1. open first PDF file
  2. document > insert pages
  3. to rearrange pages: delete pages, then insert again
