Ever wonder what all the fuss is about regarding blogs? In this hands-on session, you will learn how to start your own blog using Google's free Blogger software. Learn how blogging can be integrated into your courses as a tool for teaching and learning.

Starting your
first blog
with Blogger

 

Overview: Using Google's free Blogger software, we'll start a new account and post our first blog entry in 10 minutes. Then we'll add a picture, update our profile and explore some of Blogger's very powerful features.

  1. Download starter files, examine downloaded files
  2. Examine sample blog
  3. Browse to www.blogger.com; click "Create your own blog now" and follow instructions on screen (tip: choose "Minima" as your first template)
  4. For your first post, copy and paste text from "blog entry.doc" into blogger
  5. Click PUBLISH, then VIEW BLOG
  6. Click EDIT POSTS to edit your first entry
  7. Download a photo from Google Images (search for "film geek")
  8. Optional: edit your images at www.snipshot.com
  9. Click ADD IMAGE icon, resize image in "compose" mode
  10. Click PUBLISH, then VIEW BLOG: note image is clickable
  11. Click TEMPLATE tab, replace "Edit-me" with your favorite links (note: if you change templates, you will need to repeat this step)
  12. Save template changes, republish blog
  13. Click BACK TO DASHBOARD, then EDIT PROFILE
  14. Copy & paste the following link into the "Photo URL" field:
    https://pcweb.parkland.edu/photo/?ID=DD75FE1263BC0C49E2A416CEE09DA5E6
    (your Parkland ID photo is available from Angel: my page > preferences >
    personal information; or upload a photo to www.flickr.com)
  15. Copy and paste text from "bio.doc" into the "About Me" field
  16. Click SETTINGS > COMMENTS: who can comment=anyone; show word verification=yes; enable comment moderation=yes (add email address)
  17. Click SETTINGS > EMAIL: create a secret mail-to address (use the web version of Groupwise instead of the desktop version)
