CSC 121 WEB SITE DESIGN
Course Objectives
Instructor: Paul Young

Purpose

This course is designed specifically for designers whose objective is to function effectively in today's marketing communications industry. In this class, we will gain practical experience in problem solving by working through the design process.

Emphasis

This course is structured around real-world visual communication design projects focusing on the Internet. In this class we will learn how to create dynamic web sites using various industry-standard applications. We will focus on balancing design and aesthetics, creating user-friendly information architecture, and creating artwork for Internet publishing.

Skills

Using project-driven lessons, we will focus on learning the following skills:

  • The creative process
  • Design principles and typography
  • Applied color theory
  • Information hierarchy
  • Making presentations
  • Software proficiency in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash
  • Basic HTML
  • Web hosting, publishing and file management
  • Databases and server technology
  • Using Internet resources

Class Format

This class is based on a format of lecture, discussion, hands-on exercises, demonstrations, critiques and open lab. There will also be one quiz. It is expected that additional time, on a weekly basis, will be spent on your projects.

It is important that the group works together in a collaborative environment, learning from each other as well as the instructor. Therefore, everyone should be working on the same assignments at the same time. Understanding that there might be technical expertise differences, it is expected that more experienced users will be willing to help beginning users with the software. Conversely, more experienced users should elicit creative evaluations from beginning users during their working process.

Note: Attendance is required for the entire scheduled class period.

Expectations

The following are expected of all students:

  • Attendance (if you miss a session, you've missed a learning opportunity that's impossible to recreate)
  • Respect differences among peers (we all have different learning preferences and speeds)
  • Push yourself to do your best (the creative and technical fields are very competitive, but friendly)
  • Willingness to collaborate (interaction and constructive criticism is highly encouraged)
  • Absorb cultural values (customs, conventions, strategies, history, passion, quality, pride, vocabulary)
  • Ask questions (don't be embarrassed if you don't know something)
  • Have fun (web design is a very creative endeavor!)

Student
Conduct

In order to foster a positive classroom environment, all students are expected to following these guidelines:

  • Honesty and integrity (see Parkland Student Conduct Code, article III)
  • Courtesy (treat others as you would like to be treated)
  • Promptness (arrive on time and don't leave early)
  • Be helpful (we're here to learn as a group)
  • All cell phones and beepers turned off
  • No games, IM or email during class (unless it's related to course work)
  • No excessive noise or talking, please

Note: Parkland policy requires that all incidents of plagerism be reported to the Dean of Academic Services.
