Digital Media Student Exhibition
This year's student show entry deadline is May 3, 2006. Entry form and other information is now available online. Students should start refining their work in preparation for submission. Please consult with your instructor for notes on how to make your work better. Prints can be ordered from Walgreens ($4 for one 8x10, $2.70 each for two if ordered at the same time) or Kinkos ($1.80 for one 8.5x11). C138 (download PDF open lab schedule) also has a color laser printer you can use for free (login: "gds"; pw: "gds"). Please use quality white paper if you do your own printing. (Posted 4/7/06)

Summer/Fall Advising
CSIT program directors and chair will be providing academic advising to students preparing to enroll for Summer and/or Fall: Thursday, April 13, 5-7pm or Friday, April 14, 12-4pm in B129. You may also see Linda Crowley in B116 to set up an appointment with your program director or the department chair. (Posted 4/7/06)

National Biennial Ceramics Invitational on view until March 29
If you think ceramics have nothing to do with 3D animation, think again. If you haven't seen this exhibit in the Parkland Art Gallery, run — don't walk — to see it. Among the many inspirational pieces for character designs, you'll also see the amazing work of Joe Seigenthaler. Why not post your reactions on the discussion area on Angel (under "art & design")? (Posted 2/24/06)

Discussion forums added to Angel
Students may now post questions in three discussion forums within the Angel Learning environment (click on the "Discussion" tab). Feel free to make use of these forums. (Posted 2/9/06)

Book added to reserve section
Icons of Architecture is a great reference book for Project 1. This book is now on reserve in the Parkland Library for CSC 187. You may also want to browse Parkland's architecure section for reference and inspiration. (Posted 1/18/06)

Mermaids, Serpents and Action Heroes
This collection of Ghanaian hand-painted movie posters from the collection of Ernie Wolfe, III will be on view until February 9 in the Parkland Art Gallery. The posters in this exhibition are a result of mobile cinemas that brought mainstream movies to rural populations of Ghana. Gallery Hours: Mon–Thurs 10–3pm and 6–8pm, Fri 10–3pm, Sat Noon–2pm. (Posted 1/18/06)

Student links added
A new section has been added to the Resources page where students can share their personal web sites (or blogs or whatever). If you want your link added just email me at pyoung@parkland.edu. This is a great way to get to know your classmates (virtually anyway). (Posted 1/18/06)

Two recommended books added to reading list
Launching the Imagination is the text book for ART 121 2D Design and ART 123 3D Design. It is the best foundation art book I have read, and I highly recommend it. The Art of Maya gives beginning students a good overview of the theories behind 3D animation. (Posted 1/16/06)

Trade magazines
Parkland Library subscribes to two trade magazine that are of special interest to students of 3D animation. 3D World magazine is a British magazine full of tutorials, industry news and examples of top-level work. Be sure to check out their companion web site and their online galleries. Computer Graphics World is the poor stepsister living in the US, but still worth taking a look at, especially since they offer it for free (just fill out their free subscription form). You can't check out magazine from the library, but you CAN check out 3D World's companion CD loaded with goodies (see the reference librarian). (Posted 1/10/06)
