WEB WORKSHOP FOR GIRLS
Homework 1: Planning a Web Site
Instructor: Paul
Young
Objective
To form a strategy in order to create a web site I can be proud of.
Discussion
A web site can be a small project or a big one. Think about what you
want to do versus the amount of time you want to invest in this project.
Be realistic. Web sites have a short life span (about 100 days, according
to the Internet Archive).
Consider starting small and revising your site as you acquire more skills
and resources.
Procedure
Overview: Think about the following items and do those that make sense.
- write out a statement of your objective ("I want to share my
interests with other girls")
- determine your target audience (girls ages 10 to 16)
- research your audience (what are girls 10 to 16 interested in?)
- determine the content (personal blog, favorite links, pictures)
- determine the scope of the project (how many pages do I need? how
much free time do I have? should I just do a few pages now and expand
later? when is the projected launch date? plan out a production calendar)
- write out a strategy (research web design, organize
my pictures, organize my bookmarks, start a blog, buy web design books,
take web design classes, save money to do the above)
- make a site map (see examples)
- get feedback from my target audience
- do what I can tonight for tomorrow's class (email some text
and pictures to myself so that I can download them in class tomorrow)
