WEB WORKSHOP FOR GIRLS
Lesson 2: Obtaining a Gmail Account
Instructor: Paul Young

Objective

To obtain a Gmail account in order to access Google's free web page creation and publishing tools.

Discussion

In order to publish a web site, one must create HTML web pages, then purchase space on a web server to host those pages. Professional web designers utilize applications like Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash and a number of other tools to create web sites. All of this costs money. Fortunately Google Labs has created a way for beginners to create and publish web sites for free.

In order to use Google's tools, one must have a Gmail account. Because Gmail is still in beta testing, accounts can only be obtained by invitation from another Gmail user. Invitations can only be sent via email, so you must have a working email account. If you don't have one, please consult with your instructor.

Procedure

Overview: Send an email to your instructor requesting a Gmail account. wait for a response and follow the instructions in your email.

  1. login to your existing email account
  2. send an email to pyoung11@gmail.com with your name in the header
  3. in a few moments you will receive and invitation to open a Gmail account
  4. follow the instructions in your email message to login to your new Gmail account

Note: when choosing a user name, please choose carefully as your user name will become part of your web address.
