WEB WORKSHOP FOR GIRLS
Lesson 3: Introduction to Google Page Creator

Objective

To become comfortable with creating web pages, editing content and making links within the Google Page Creator environment by creating a web site similar to this one:

Discussion

A web page is one single page that can be viewed on the web. A web site is a series of related web pages linked to each other. One way to make a web site is to use existing templates that have been designed for you. Google Page Creator allows you to chose a template and then add your own content. Google also provides free web server space for you to publish your web site. In this lesson, we will be building a 5-page web site using existing content which you can later edit.

 

Procedure

Overview: Choose a template style. Upload the sample content provided into Google's templates. Create links and publish. Edit and personalize the web site with your own content.

  1. download sample content to your desktop
  2. browse to www.google.com and login to your google account
  3. browse to Google Labs (click MORE, the choose GOOGLE LABS on the right)
  4. browse to Google Page Creator, and login

creating a home page

  1. note current location "edit page: home"
  2. change LAYOUT to simple 1-column format (this can be changed later)
  3. change LOOK to template style of your choice (this can be changed at any time)
  4. change title to your name
  5. add the following links under subtitle: home, my words, my pictures, my links, contact me
  6. change content to something like "Welcome to my web site"
  7. add picture "home.jpg"
  8. preview, publish, then view live

creating the internal pages

  1. go back to PAGE MANAGER, view as list
  2. create new page "words" (note: this page's web address will be http://yourname.googlepages.com/words)
  3. edit words page: change title, subtitle (links), content
  4. style text: try minor head, bold, italic
  5. preview, publish, then view live
  6. repeat with new pages (pictures, links, contact)

adding internal links

  1. go back to PAGE MANAGER
  2. edit your home page
  3. select "my words" and insert a link to your words page
  4. repeat with other links (pictures, links, contact)
  5. preview, publish, then view live
  6. repeat with other pages in your web site

adding external links

  1. edit your links page
  2. select "Amelie" and insert a link to web address
  3. using pyoung11.googlepages.com/links as a reference, locate the web address for "Amelie"
  4. copy the URL to the clipboard (edit > copy)
  5. paste URL into the web address field (edit > paste)
  6. repeat with other links on the page
  7. publish, then view live to test links

modifying external links to open in a new window

  1. view > source code of pyoung11.googlepages.com/links and find the "Amelie" link (edit > find)
  2. copy the code <target = "_blank"> to the clipboard
  3. edit your links page
  4. select your content area and EDIT HTML
  5. locate the link to "Amelie"
  6. paste the <target = "_blank"> code into the appropriate location
  7. publish, then view live to test links
  8. repeat with other links on the page
  9. test and troubleshoot your site
  10. send an email to pyoung@parkland.edu with the web address of your site
