Web Workshop for Girls >
PurposeThis workshop is designed specifically for girls who want to learn more about the Internet and the creation of web sites. No prior web design experience is required, although familiarity with personal computers and Internet browsers will be helpful.
EmphasisThrough project-based hands-on sessions, students will be introduced to two of the professional tools used to create visual elelments for web sites: Photoshop and Flash. We will also cover design and technical issues related to web sites. All students will create and publish a web site similar to this site: http://pyoung11.googlepages.com/
SkillsUsing project-driven lessons, we will focus on the following basic skills: Browser essentials Content management Basic HTML Image manipulation in Photoshop GIF animation in Photoshop Vector animation in Flash Design principles and typography Internet resources for web designers
EtiquetteIt is expected that all students respect the following workshop guidelines: Courtesy (treat others as you would like to be treated) Promptness (arrive on time and don't leave early) Be helpful (interaction and collaboration among students is encouraged) Honesty and integrity (don't cheat, don't steal) Ask questions (don't be embarrassed if you don't know something) All cell phones and beepers turned off No games, IM or email during class (unless it's related to course work) No excessive noise or talking, please Have fun (web design is a very creative endeavor!)
MaterialsThe following materials are recommended to succeed in the workshop: Paper or notebook, pen or pencil (to take notes) Blank CD-Rs and/or USB flash drives (to copy files between lab and home) Email address accessible via a browser (i.e. Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc.)
