INTRODUCTION TO MACROMEDIA FIREWORKS
Lesson 2: Vector Graphics
Instructor: Paul Young

Overview

Vector graphics are also known as "outline-fill." Vectors have a distinct advantage over raster (bitmap) images. Vector art is resolution-independent, is much smaller in file size than bitmap images and can be easily edited.

In this lesson, we'll work with Fireworks's vector drawing tools to create a flow-chart that can be optimized for web as well as print.

Procedure

prepping for the lesson

  1. download lesson starter files
  2. examine downloaded files
  3. launch Fireworks
  4. file > open "lesson2/2-before.png" (note size, zoom)
  5. file > save as "lesson2/after.png"
  6. practice navigation shortcuts: SPACE, SPACE+CTRL, SPACE+CTRL+ALT, CTRL+1, CTRL+0
  7. note toolbox, properties, floating palettes

adding type

  1. select "type" layer
  2. text tool: type "Lesson 2" (Arial 16, centered, black)
  3. copy text block (drag, add ALT+SHIFT)
  4. edit > repeat (ctrl+Y)
  5. change text to "Lesson 3", "Resources"
  6. window > align: horiz center, distribute top edge

adding boxes and rules

  1. new layer "boxes" (lock other layers); restack to bottom
  2. draw box: fill=white, stroke=black (2px)
  3. copy box (drag, add ALT+SHIFT)
  4. edit > repeat (ctrl+Y)
  5. align and distribute (if needed)
  6. new layer "rules" (lock other layers); restack to top
  7. draw rules: stroke=black (2px) (hint: zoom in)
  8. duplicate rules as needed
  9. align and distribute (if needed)

optimize for web & print

  1. file > save
  2. choose 2-up (note file sizes, download time)
  3. window > optimize: GIF 128
  4. file > export: "after.gif"
  5. modify > canvas > image size: resolution=300 PPI
  6. file > export: "after.ai" (Illustrator 7)
  7. file > save as "after-hires.png" (for importing into Word)
