How can hundreds of people collaborate on writing one article? Wikipedia has done it, and so can you. In this hands-on session, learn how you can utilize free Wiki software in your courses as a collaborative teaching and learning tool.

The following resources will help you get started:

 

 

Experience a
Wiki in Action

 

Overview: We'll visit an existing Wiki site and login. The we'll create a new test page and collaboratively author a short article.

  1. Browse to c138.wikispaces.com and review the articles posted; also review the "Articles needed" list
  2. Click on the "Join" link (do not make a new wiki space when you join*)
  3. Your presenter will grant permission for you to join this wikispace
  4. Confirm you email address (Groupwise Webaccess)
  5. Edit the home page, add a new entry: "How do you make tea?" (tip: try the floating tool bar)
  6. Link the entry to a new page "Making Tea" (important: name your new page using key words, do NOT use a question mark), save
  7. Go to the page "Making Tea" and edit it: write the first sentence, save
  8. Edit the page as many times a you wish (try some of the formatting tools) (also see "Who Else is Editing My Page?")
  9. Monitor your new page (click on "Notify Me")
  10. Explore the discussion and history areas
  11. Click on "Manage Space", then "List Pages": delete the "Making Tea" page

Setting up your own Wiki

 

Overview: Using Wikispace's free site, we'll start a new Wikispace and post our first entry in 10 minutes.

  1. Read the wikispaces help section
  2. Download starter files, examine downloaded files
  3. Sign in at www.wikispaces.com
  4. Browse to www.wikispaces.com/site/for/edublogs to create your own Wikispace* (tip: protected is a good choice)
  5. Add text and pictures to your home page, save
  6. Click "Notify Me" tab: monitor your space
  7. Click "Settings": update personal info
  8. Click "Manage Space": edit the "Space Settings" area
  9. Click "Edit Navigation": add some links to the navigation area
  10. Optional: Download sample theme and stylesheet and customize your wiki's look and feel
  11. Tip: When making additional Wikispaces, remember to go to www.wikispaces.com/site/for/edublogs* (do not click on your name to make a new space)
