Required Materials

Please note the page title: Required Materials.  That means ya gotta have these things.

Books

  • Charters, Ann.  The Story and Its Writer 6th edition.

Note: all short stories will be found in this book.  We will be using this book first, so it should be your priority.

  • Chopin, Kate.  The Awakening.

  • Shelley, Mary.  Frankenstein

Note: we will be using the reissue edition linked here, and all page numbers will reflect this edition.  However, you are certainly free to use another edition if you already own the book or can borrow it, and I will gladly provide reference points for the page #'s.

Both of these books are available at the Parkland bookstore.

Technology

  • Regular and reliable access to the Internet.

This one's a gimme.  You cannot complete an on-line class if you cannot get on-line.  For this class, you will need to be able to get on-line at least three times a week, and within specific time-frames (between Tuesday and Friday, for example).

  • Access to a regular and reliable email account that you check on a regular basis.

In order to sign up for this class, you had to activate/access your Parkland student email account.  Personally, I don't care if you use that email or another, as long as it's an account you check several times a week, as I will regularly send out course information via email.  As a personal favor to me, please make sure the account is kept current and that you keep an eye on how full your mailbox is.  Bouncing messages are no one's friend.

  • Access to our class WebBoard.  Go here for directions for creating an account.

  • Access either to Microsoft Word or to a word processing program that can be made compatible with MS Word.

I'll talk more about this in the policies section, but simply put: I need to be able to read your papers and exams.  I'm more than happy to explain to you how to save the files so I can read them, but you have to be willing to work with me.

It goes without saying (I hope) that you need to know how to use a computer.  In particular, you need to know how to navigate a web page, use email (including sending attachments), and use a word processor.  You do not need to know how to use WebBoard; however, you have to be willing to learn.
