Story of an Hour

Directions:  In the appropriate conference on our class Web Board, discuss one or all of the following.

Note: since this is the first week, I'll reiterate some of the directions made elsewhere:

  • You should make a separate post for each story.  Do not put both of your responses for in one post.  Since you're only responding to one story this week, it's not an issue yet, but it will be next week.
  • Be sure to post you responses in the appropriate conference on the WebBoard.  You determine which conference you should post in, look for group name, then week.  So, if you are in the Haven group, you will post your discussion of this story in "Haven; Week One."  If you are not sure which group you're in, check here
  • Give your post a label that reflects its contents.  For example, if you discuss this story, you might want to label it "The Story of an Hour."
  • Your post should be a minimum of 5 sentences.  That's a minimum - you may need to write more to explore the question fully.
  1. Describe your reaction to the story.  Consider in particular you response to Mrs. Mallard.  Do you sympathize with her?  Why or why not?  What about your own background and life situation might contribute to this response?
  2. We learn very little about Mr. Mallard in the story.  Why?  How might the story have been different if we had been told, for example, that Mr. Mallard was a bad or abusive husband?  Or a good and kind man?  How does leaving this ambiguous affect our reaction to the story?
