The House on Mango Street

Directions:  In the appropriate conference on our class WebBoard, discuss one or all of the following.
  1. What did the narrator want out of a house that she did not get? What does this suggestion to you about the theme of the story?
  2. Think about what a house symbolizes in our culture. Why might that be important to a child of the working poor? Does this help explain why the house on Mango Street is a disappointment?
  3. Do you sympathize with the narrator? Why or why not?
  4. The narrator says that her father talked of a house when he held a lottery ticket. What does the lottery ticket symbolize? How does it contribute to the theme of the story?
  5. Why is the house on "Mango Street?"  Why not Elm or Lincoln?
