The Ones who Walk Away from Omelas

Directions:  In the appropriate conference on our class Web Board, discuss one or all of the following.
  1. "Allegory" refers to a piece of fiction that makes literal some kind of abstract idea.  Of ten this is done through personification – through making human characters out of virtues or vices (the classic example being Pilgrim's Progress).  Other times it is done through reducing a complex situation down to its core elements (Dr. Seuss's "The Sneeches" and the Star Trek episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"  being classic examples

For what situations/realities/issues might "Omelas" serve as an allegory?  Consider:

  • What is the fundamental reality of Omelas?
  • Where in modern life does that reality manifest?
  1.   The title of the story is "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas."  Why do some people walk away?  Do you get the sense that they are to be admired for walking away?
  2. The only options discussed in the story are either living with the situation or walking away.  Why are other options, such as trying to help the child, not discussed?
