The Rocking Horse Winner

Directions:  In the appropriate conference on our class Web Board, discuss one or all of the following.
  1. Read the first paragraph of the story. Based just on that paragraph, what theme do you see emerging? That is, what do you think the story is going to say about the human condition?
  2. Does that theme play out throughout the rest of the story?
  3. Agency is often defined as "the means or mode of acting" – the ability to affect the world, the power to bring about desired results, etc. To whom does the mother attribute agency? That is, who does she think controls destiny? What about Paul? To whom does he attribute agency?
  4. How is "luck" defined in the story?
