Attendance and Grading Policies
Fall 2006

Grading

This course is graded using an achievement grading system.  You receive points for attendance, the labs, completing each project, and for the tests.  Your final grade is determined by how many points you earn.  The total will be approximately 100 points, but may not be exactly 100.   See Grading Scale below.  The grading criteria for each assignment will be clearly described before you start work.  You will always have a least one week prior notice of the due date for all graded material.  There will be no "pop" tests or surprises.  Most grading is done interactively with the instructor, with the instructor giving you immediate feedback or on Angel.  While you are working, the instructor will be glad to evaluate your progress and tell you whether your work is acceptable, and what you need to do or change to earn the points for that assignment.  If you know that you must miss a specific graded due date, you may have that task graded early.  There are no make-ups for any of the assignments.

Graded Assignments

Type of Assignment Points Given

Attendance 1 point per for every two classes up to 12 points total, rounded down (i.e. you can miss 7 classes without penalty).  Attendance will be kept on Angel.
Labs Varying from about 2 to 6 points per lab.  Your 2 lowest labs will be replaced by the max score for that lab (i.e. you can miss 2 labs without penalty).
Tests Varying number of points, depending on the questions.  The point value will be announced when the test is announced, always at least a week in advance.
Projects Varying number of points, getting larger as the semester progresses.  Usually from 10 to 20 points each.  Since you have about 2 to 3 weeks to complete each project, plus the ability to upgrade the project after grading, there are no late projects or make ups allowed, and all projects are required.
Final Exact number of points announced at the end of the term.  Will be about 15% of total points.

Class Attendance

Programming is a skill that you can only learn well by doing, and class is the best place to program because of the ready availability of help.  We will discuss some practical techniques in class that are not covered in the book.  Also, you are responsible for everything said or handed out in a class, whether you attend that particular class or not.  Good participation and effort in the in-class exercises are necessary to get credit for attending a class.  Attendance will be kept and the resulting grades posted on Angel.

Labs

Assigned Labs will be included in the Daily Topics on the Csc 123 - Computer Science I, Programming in Java home page.  The assignment will include how the labs are to be submitted and graded, and how many points they are worth.  The grades will be posted in Angel.

Projects

The first Project will not be assigned until about the middle of the semester.  Projects will be fully specified in a link from the class's Csc 123 - Computer Science I, Programming in Java home page, along with the Grading Criteria for that project and how to submit the project..   The grades will be posted on Angel.

Tests

Tests will be administered through Angel Tests will always be announced at least a week in advance.  The tests will be graded through Angel, and the grades will be posted on Angel.
