| Course Content and Requirements |
| Fall 2006 |
All course requirements that carry a grade will always be announced Sunday night using Parkland's Angel on-line courseware. Except for the Short Week 14 just before Thanksgiving, you will always have until 3:00 am Saturday morning of that week to complete the required work for that week. There will be no surprises.
A programming lab will be assigned most
weeks. You will be
expected to finish the lab and submit it as directed via Unix or
Angel by 3:00 am Saturday
morning of that week. You may work together and help each other
on the labs, but only openly using the Angel chat room for
that week. Even though the labs can be collaborative,
you are expected to actually do and fully
understand the work you present for grade points (please
see Plagiarism policies). The
labs will be directly related to the material covered in the your readings.
Most weeks there will be a Weekly Test administered through Angel. You will be able to take the test any time from 6:00 am Friday morning to 3:00 am Saturday morning. The Weekly Tests will cover the material for that week, particularly concepts and terminology from the readings. The Weekly Tests are all open book and open Internet browsing. However, the tests must be done completely individually without any help from any other person, either through Angel or by any means outside of Angel.
A number of graded programming projects will be assigned throughout the course and submitted via Unix. Each project will be specified in detail in a project description web page on this site, including specific grading criteria for earning the points for that project. Each graded project will be considered due at the date and time scheduled on the project description posted on this website, which will be 3:00 am on a Monday morning. The grade will be reported through Angel and can be discussed using Angel's personal e-mail. The student will then be able to improve the grade by eliminating any deficiencies and re-submitting the project through Angel any time during the grading dates listed.
The projects must be designed and coded individually -- there will be no projects done in groups. Students may get as much appropriate help for their projects as they need, but it must be done openly through Angels Chat Rooms. Every student must actually do and fully understand any work submitted for a grade. (please see Plagiarism policies).
Always have complete backups of all your work and retain them until after the end of the semester. Retaining backups of all your work at all times is a course requirement for all graded work, and your grade may be adversely affected if you do not have a backup if needed. Also, you should regularly check your grades on Angel, and bring any inaccuracies to my attention as soon as possible.
There will be two tests given during the semester, the Midterm and Final. They will be based mostly on the readings, but also with some questions about the labs and projects you did. Both tests are already announced in the Weekly Topics.
