| Attendance and Grading Policies |
| Fall 2006 |
This course is graded using an achievement grading system. You receive points for attendance, weekly labs, each project, weekly tests, and for the Midterm and Final. Your final grade is determined by the percentage of points you earned out of the total possible points you could have earned. See Grading Scale below.
The grading criteria for
each task
will be clearly described before
you start work. You will always have notification in
the Weekly Topics, according to the time frames listed in
Course Content and Requirements. There will be no surprises.
| Type of Assignment | Points Given |
| Attendance | 1 point per week
for up to 12 points
total (i.e. you can miss 3 weeks without penalty). Given for
satisfactory participation in the chat rooms of Parkland's
Angel online courseware. Note: Changed September 30th to remove as a requirement. Every student will get the full 12 points for whatever participation they feel they need through the end of the course. |
| Weekly Labs | Varying from about 2 to 6 points per lab. Your 3 lowest labs will be replaced by the maximum score for that lab (i.e. you can miss 3 weeks without penalty). |
| Weekly Tests | 1 point for every three questions, rounded up. (i.e. you can miss 2 questions without penalty). Your lowest 2 test scores will be replaced with the maximum score for that test. (i.e. you can miss 2 tests without penalty). |
| Projects | Varying number of points, getting larger as the semester progresses. Usually from 10 to 20 points each. Since you have about 2 to 3 weeks to complete each project, plus the ability to upgrade the project after grading, there are no late projects or make ups allowed, and all projects are required. |
| Midterm | Exact number of points announced at Midterm. Will be about 10% of the expected final number of points. |
| Final | Exact number of points announced at the end of the term. Will be about 10% of total points. |
| Course Grade | Points Earned |
| A | 90% to 100% of your total possible points. |
| B | 80% to 89% of your total possible points. |
| C | 70% to 79% of your total possible points. |
| D | 60% to 69% of your total possible points. |
| F | 59% or less of your total possible points. |
Note: This requirement removed September 30th.
Every student will get full credit for participation.
Programming is a skill that you can only learn well by doing.
Since this is an online course, there is no classroom to ask questions and solve
problems and get personal help from the teacher or other students.
Instead, that function will be supported by the chat room's in Parkland's
Angel online courseware. Each
week will have its own chat room, active for only that week. Also, each
Project will have its own chat room, active from when the project is assigned
until when it is due.
Activity in the chat room is the
equivalent of attendance at class. You are required to participate in the
appropriate chat rooms every week. One point toward the final grade will
be given each week if you have satisfactorily participated in the chat room.
I reserve the right to determine what is satisfactory participation.
You're participation will be considered satisfactory if you make a number of
serious, constructive postings during that week. A constructive posting
can be a question, or an answer to someone else's question, but it can also be a
report on a problem you had and the answer you found.
Most weeks there will be Weekly Lab assigned in a link from the class's Csc 125 Online - Computer Science II, Programming in C++ home page. The labs will be submitted by a simple Unix copy to one of my directories. They will be due 3:00 am Saturday morning of that week. The grades will be posted in Angel.
Most weeks there will be a Weekly Test administered through Angel. You will be able to take the test any time from 6:00 am Friday morning to 3:00 am Saturday morning. You will get immediate feedback on your grade from Angel. The Weekly Tests are all open book and open Internet browsing. However, the tests must be done completely individually without any help from any other person, either through Angel or by any means outside of Angel.
The Projects will be fully specified in a link from the class's Csc 125 Online - Computer Science II, Programming in C++ home page, along with the Grading Criteria for that project. The due date and time for all projects will be a Monday morning at 3:00 am. Projects will be submitted by a simple Unix copy to one of my directories. The grades will be posted on Angel.
The Midterm will given on Angel from 6:00 am, Friday, October 13th until 3:00 am, Saturday, October 14th. You will get immediate feedback on your grade from Angel. Although taken at your convenience at a computer of your choosing, it is still a closed book, closed Internet test. You can not get help from any source by any means.
Parkland College requires a final be given for all courses that receive college credit. The final for CSC 125 will be a test, similar to the Midterm Test, but somewhat longer and more comprehensive. The final will count about 30% of the total points for the course. Note that this percentage is much higher for this online course than for my traditional classroom Csc 125, in which the final is about 10% of the course grade. The higher percentage reflects the fact that, in the online course, the final is the only time I will see you in person and can verify that you have really been doing the work and have achieved the learning represented by your grade.
