| Attendance and Grading Policies |
| Fall 2006 |
This course is graded using an achievement grading system. You receive points for attendance, labs, each project, quizzes, and for the Final. Your final grade is determined by the percentage of points you earned out of the total possible points you could have earned. See Grading Scale below.
The grading criteria for
each task
will be clearly described before
you start work. You will always have notification in
the Weekly Topics, according to the time frames listed in
Course Content and Requirements. There will be no surprises.
Most grading is done interactively with the instructor, with the
instructor giving you immediate feedback. While you are working, the instructor will be glad to evaluate your progress and
tell you whether your work is acceptable, and what you need to do or change to earn the
points for that assignment. If you know that you must
miss a specific graded due date, you may have that task graded early.
There are no make-ups for specific tasks, but for certain very good excuses,
usually arranged in advance of an absence, I simply reduce the number of total
points for that student by the number of points in that task. That makes
the other tasks relatively more important for the final grade for that student.
| Type of Assignment | Points Given |
| Attendance | 1 point per week for up to 12 points total (i.e. you can miss 3 weeks without penalty). |
| Labs | Varying from about 2 to 6 points per lab. Your lowest lab will be replaced by the max score for that lab (i.e. you can miss 1 lab without penalty). |
| Quizzes | 1 point for every three questions, rounded up. (i.e. you can miss 2 questions without penalty). |
| Projects | Varying number of points, getting larger as the semester progresses. Usually from 10 to 20 points each. Since you have about 2 to 3 weeks to complete each project, plus the ability to upgrade the project after grading, there are no late projects or make ups allowed, and all projects are required. |
| Final | Exact number of points announced at the end of the term. Will be about 10% of total points. |
| Course Grade | Points Earned (note also the Attendance Policy above) |
| A | 90% to 100% of your total possible points. |
| B | 80% to 89% of your total possible points. |
| C | 70% to 79% of your total possible points. |
| D | 60% to 69% of your total possible points. |
| F | 59% or less of your total possible points. |
Programming is a skill that you can only learn well by doing, and class is the best place to
program because of the ready availability of help. We will discuss some practical techniques in
class that are not covered in the book. Also, you are responsible for everything said or handed out
in a class, whether you attend that particular class or not. Good participation and
effort in class are necessary to get credit for attending a class.
There will be a number of Labs assigned in a link from the class's Csc 125 Online - Computer Science II, Programming in C++ home page. The labs will be submitted by a simple Unix copy to one of my directories.
There will be a some quizzes administered through Angel. You will get immediate feedback on your grade from Angel.
The Projects will be fully specified in a link from the class's Csc 125 Online - Computer Science II, Programming in C++ home page, along with the Grading Criteria for that project. The due date and time for all projects. Projects will be submitted by a simple Unix copy to one of my directories. The grades will be posted on Angel.
Parkland College requires a final be given for all courses
that receive college credit. The final for CSC 125
will be a test, similar to the previous
tests, but somewhat longer and more comprehensive. It
will be given during the published final exam time:
|
Wed. Dec. 13 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm or Thurs., Dec. 14 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm ( your choice ) |
Final: You may take the final at the scheduled time on Wednesday, or
with my on-line section of Csc 125. Both versions will be given
in-person at Room M233 (our regular classroom) at Parkland.
Note that this is not the normal class day or time Final Exam Study Guide |
Attendance at this time period is a course requirement. Please plan accordingly and do not schedule any conflicts.
