| Getting WS_FTP LE and PuTTY |
WS_FTP LE
WS_FTP LE is shareware that is legal to use indefinitely in an educational setting without any payment. It greatly simplifies file transfer between Windows and Linux computers using FTP (File Transfer Protocol).
you may copy wsftple.exe from any Windows computer in the Computer Science and Information Technologies labs. It is on the Faculty folder as sbadman\Csc125\wsftple.exe. The Faculty folder is an Icon on the Windows desktop. The file is small enough to fit on a standard floppy disk, or you can use a USB flash memory drive to transfer to your home computer.
wsftple.exe is a standard Windows installation file. Just run it once and it will install WS_FTP LE on your computer. The installation is very straightforward. Just follow the prompts on the screen.
Alternatively, wsftple.exe, is available on my login:
io.csit.parkland.edu/~sbadman
You may login to your own Linux account, and then type the command:
cp ~sbadman\wsftple.exe .
Notice the space and then then period at the end. The period is important. This command copies the wsftple.exe file to your login directory.
Then, if you know how, you may FTP this file to your Windows computer using Windows command line FTP. This is somewhat complicated, and we will not cover it in class. Be sure to FTP using binary mode and not ASCII mode.
PuTTY
PuTTY is freeware that allows a Windows user to easily access the command line login of a Linux computer on the Internet.
You may copy putty.exe, from any Windows computer in the Computer Science and Information Technologies labs. It is also on the Faculty folder as sbadman\Csc125\putty.exe. The Faculty folder is an Icon on the Windows desktop. The file is small enough to fit on a standard floppy disk, or you can use a USB flash memory drive to transfer it to your home computer.
Installation on your computer is very easy. Simply copy putty.exe to any directory you want on your computer, and then put a shortcut to it on your desktop. putty.exe is a standalone Windows program that does not need any installation. It will run directly by double clicking the file name or a shortcut to the file.
More complete instructions can be found at http://www.csit.parkland.edu/~smauney/csc128/login_remotely.html
Alternatively, the standalone Windows executable file, putty.exe, is available on my login:
io.csit.parkland.edu/~sbadman
You may copy this file to your Linux directory, and then FTP this file to your Windows computer using WS_FTP LE. Be sure to FTP using binary mode and not ASCII mode.
