David Jones was the beloved Chair of the Fine and Applied Arts Department from 1988 until his death from cancer in April, 2002. He was a remarkable man who was a great friend, mentor and colleague and this annual speech contest honors his memory and his spirit. He cared deeply about student success and that is why we honor David’s memory with a student speech contest.
If he were here today he would probably say to you, “you can do this – now get going.”
David Jones began teaching English at Parkland College in 1971. Over the years he became involved in many campus activities. He worked with theatre, oral interpretation, speech communication, and he directed the speech team for many years. He had a great sense of humor, a wonderful way of relating to others, and a commitment to Parkland College and its students. We will always miss his spirit and his laughter.
