Human Services Technician Program





HST 111: Introduction to Human Services
Foundation of human service work; history, attitudes, values, skills and knowledge; introduces students to major practice areas in human services delivery system.

HST 112: Human Behavior in the Social Environment
Social science concepts concerning environmental influences on human behavior fundamental to human services practice: social and ecological systems; life course development; culture, ethnicity, and gender; stress, coping and adaptation; major social issues related to development over the life course. Prerequisite: HST 111

HST 113: Survey of Psychiatric Rehabilitation
First in series for State of Illinois Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certificate program. Focus on rehabilitative approach to serving individuals with severe mental illness. Themes include understanding psychiatric disability and current treatment approaches; familiarity with mental health system and legal issues; psychiatric rehabilitation through vocational and skills training; and family and community support systems.

HST 114 Group Processes and Practice
Group process: types of groups, group tasks, leadership styles, roles of participants, and stages of group development. Incorporates lecture and discussion with experiential learning. Prerequisites: HST 111 and HST 112

HST 211 Intervention in Human Services
Introduction to core concepts; values, processes, and skills used in delivery of human services. Combining lecture and discussion with experiential learning to emphasize professional socialization, interviewing skills, case planning and evaluation, and documentation. Prerequisite: HST 112

HST 212 Human Services Internship
Enhances basic skills learned in HST 2 1 1 . In addition to weekly seminars, students work within community agencies for 1 6 hours per week. Emphasis on continued skill development while providing direct service to agency personnel and clients. Prerequisites: successful completion of HST 111, HST 112, HST 114, HST 211, and approval for placement.
