The specimen of Shakopee Chert contains many small, round structures. In three dimensions, the round structures become spherical. The spheres have cores of contrasting color. The donut shaped elements are how they appear in cross-section. Perhaps think of Peanut M & M's as a visual analogy. Such structures are refered to as oolites.
